Colorado Avalanche sign a standout prospect in defense One of the Avalanche’s best prospects has signed a contract.
On Friday, defenseman Sean Behrens was signed by the Colorado Avalanche to a three-year, entry-level contract, marking a significant move. It’s going to start in 2024–25, and he’ll end this season on an amateur tryout with the Colorado Eagles.
The Avalanche chose 21-year-old Behrens with the 61st overall pick in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft. He has since become one of the team’s most promising prospects. Behrens has been a member of the University of Denver team for the past three seasons. With the institution, he scored 81 points and scored 10 goals in 112 games. But his best year at the university was 2023–24, when he set new career highs with four goals, 27 assists, and 31 points.
Over his three-year stint with the University of Denver, Behrens collected many accolades. During the 2021-22 season, he was selected to the NCHC All-Rookie Team. After blocking 70 shots this season for Denver, he was named the NCHC Defensive Defenseman of the Year. He also won two National Championships with Denver (2022 & 2024). That’s a strong resume.
After an immensely successful collegiate career, the Avalanche must be ecstatic that Behrens is turning pro. The Illinois native has all the tools to blossom into an impactful two-way defenseman in the NHL in the near future. He displayed how steady he is defensively with Denver, but he also has the speed and passing skills to make an impact offensively.
