Following Shaun Johnson’s admission that he re-signed with the Warriors following the James Fisher-Harris coup, Andrew Webster is in favor of Johnson signing a new deal with the Warriors.

Shaun Johnson, whose current NRL contract expires at the end of this year, has begun discussions with the Warriors about sticking with the team after 2024. Adam Webster, the coach of New Zealand, disclosed on Monday that the team is thrilled to have Johnson on staff and is looking forward to working with James Fisher-Harris, a recent addition. Last Monday, the three-time premiership winner—a New Zealand international who turned down a four-year contract with the team—was revealed as the club’s newest addition for 2025. Johnson said he had visited with Fisher-Harris’ management after the player’s signing was announced, and he claimed to have started negotiations with the Warriors for a new contract.

“It’s certainly something to celebrate (Fisher-Harris’ signing) and want to play on for,” Johnson revealed on Monday. “I’m taking it week by week. For me to make that decision to play on, I’ve got to actually receive a contract offer, and that hasn’t happened yet. But I am certainly starting those conversations with the right people, catching up with my manager today.”

Johnson is currently battling an Achilles injury, which forced him from the field with three minutes left on the clock in Friday night’s loss to the Dragons. The halfback did not train on Monday but is expected to play this weekend, although there have been talks that he may be rested in the coming weeks to give his niggling injury some time to heal.

Webster has made no secret of his wish to see Johnson stay for a few more years, even though his future after this year is still somewhat uncertain. “A hundred per cent would love to have Shaun around again,” stated Webster. “Although the season is young, I believe he is crucial to our squad and I adore the way he is playing. We’ll sort things out when we can because we have a nice friendship.”
