What Will Happen With Guardians’ Shane Bieber After His Injuries?
After learning that Shane Bieber would require Tommy John surgery, the Cleveland Guardians will need to look for more pitchers.

The Cleveland Guardians’ once-hot and promising season has descended into a complete catastrophe.

Shane Bieber, who pitched 11.0 innings this season without giving up a run, will require Tommy John surgery and will be sidelined for the remainder of the year. Although the exact date of the procedure is unknown, Bieber has decided not to make another pitch in 2024.

Well, they need to get more pitching. But the situation gets more complicated considering they’re already dealing with their fair share of injuries to the pitching staff.

Gavin Williams has yet to throw a pitch this season due to feeling elbow discomfort in spring training. He did recently throw a bullpen session and is on track to return hopefully soon. The bullpen also took a hit before the season started after the team learned Trevor Stephan would need Tommy John surgery, James Karinchak would miss the start of the season with a shoulder issue, and Sam Hentges would also begin the year on the injured list with swelling in his finger.

Xzavion Curry and Ben Lively did make rehab appearances with the Columbus Clippers at the end of the week.

After learning of the injury, the team officially placed Bieber on the injured list and did recall right-handed reliever Peter Strzelecki.

Cleveland could have to go elsewhere for any kind of pitching assistance given the severity of all of these ailments and the system’s current depth. The team may ultimately package some of their young position players and make a trade for a starter, or this may come from the free agency market.
