The New England Patriots signed safety Kyle Dugger to a long-term contract to keep him in Foxboro, which was a crucial move to maintain their Top 10 defense.
The promise made by new head coach Jerod Mayo to “burn some cash” in free agency this offseason hasn’t been fulfilled by the New England Patriots. However, they did write a sizable check on Sunday.
Several sources claim that the Patriots signed Kyle Dugger to a four-year, $58 million contract that includes a $32.5 million guarantee. A significant salary increase for one of the team’s top defenders.
Last month, the Pats gave Dugger the franchise tag. He would have made $17.1 million this season if those stipulations had been followed. On the other hand, the new pact preserves one of the cornerstones of New England’s future.
Dugger is the first top Patriots draft pick (first player selected, not necessarily first round) to get a second contract from the team since Nate Solder (1st round, 2011)
The Leonir-Rhyne alum has made 343 tackles (including 17 for a loss), 20 pass breakups, and nine interceptions over his first four seasons and he scored three touchdowns during the 2022 season.
Since joining the team as a second-round (No. 37 overall) draft selection in 2020, Dugger has been one of the team’s most reliable defenders. The 27-year-old led all defensive backs with 109 total tackles, while also compiling seven passes-defensed, two interceptions and 1.5 sacks. His on-field prowess combined with his football acumen should help him command several lucrative offers, should he hit the open market.
This offseason, the Patriots also inked offensive tackle Mike Onwenu to a long-term contract. However, they still require a franchise quarterback and offensive skill position upgrades going into the April 25 selection.
