WR Justin Jefferson of the Vikings is rumored to be getting a new contract worth over $30 million a season.
According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, wide receiver Justin Jefferson of the Minnesota Vikings is projected to earn over $30 million a year on his next contract.
The amount of guaranteed money in the deal is reportedly a sticking point for Jefferson and some of his contemporaries, according to Fowler.
Tyreek Hill of the Miami Dolphins was mentioned by Fowler to support his argument. The eight-time Pro Bowler’s guaranteed monetary payout is set to expire in 2024. Though improbable, the Dolphins can easily cut him in 2025 or 2026 if they so want.
Davante Adams, who signed a record-setting contract with the Las Vegas Raiders before Hill swiftly reset the market, had a similar narrative.
That’s essentially the baseline for Jefferson given his output to far, especially considering that A.J. Brown of the Philadelphia Eagles and Amon-Ra St. Brown of the Detroit Lions each earn more than $30 million annually. With 98.3 yards per game as his career receiving average, the 24-year-old is a three-time Pro Bowler.
The concern with Jefferson is how much more he could raise the going rate for top-tier pass catchers. Is a $35 million wage a year realistic? How about forty million dollars?
The conversation’s crucial background is provided by Fowler’s report.
In terms of overall value and average compensation, Jefferson’s deal may be a little less than anticipated, but it has more assurances.
Returning to Hill, the contract he signed with the Dolphins was for $120 million, of which $72.2 million was guaranteed. Given that St. Brown is receiving guarantees totaling $77 million of his $120 million contract, the terms of his Lions extension weren’t all that different.
Jefferson may set an example for other receivers by paying more attention to the little things rather than the more widely recognized measurements.
