Falcons depth chart, salary cap following Kirk Cousins, and Darnell Mooney’s NFL contracts.
In 2024, the aerial attack of the Atlanta Falcons will appear very different.
Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reported on Monday that the NFC South franchise and quarterback Kirk Cousins have reached an agreement on a four-year, $180 million contract. Cousins is the focal point of the deal. In addition, the Falcons have a new wide receiver to throw to: Darnell Mooney, who the team signed to a three-year, $39 million contract on Tuesday, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
The two players are joining an Atlanta squad with $13 million in team cap space, according to Over The Cap.
According to the team’s offensive skill player depth chart, they are positioned as follows:
On paper, the Cousins contract is a head-turning one for a quarterback who will be 36 years old and coming off a significant Achilles injury when he takes the field during the 2024 campaign.
However, the Falcons also received inconsistent quarterback play at best last season with Desmond Ridder and Taylor Heinicke. Had it been even a little better, the 7-10 team might have won the NFC South instead of the 9-8 Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
And as long as Cousins is healthy, he will provide that better quarterback play the franchise is seeking.
The four-time Pro Bowler has seven seasons with more than 4,000 passing yards on his resume and led the Minnesota Vikings to a 13-4 record during his last full healthy season in 2022. He was on track to put up excellent numbers again in 2023 when he completed 69.5 percent of his passes for 2,331 yards, 18 touchdowns and five interceptions through eight games prior to the injury.
Anticipate significant results once more from a Falcons offence that is still in need of playmakers.
Atlanta’s offensive possibilities include Mooney, who was just two seasons removed from leading the Chicago Bears in receiving yards in 2021, as well as Bijan Robinson, Drake London, and Kyle Pitts.
The combination of Cousins and new head coach Raheem Morris can change that in 2024. Former head coach Arthur Smith was frequently criticised for not getting the ball into his playmakers’ hands during the previous season.
If it does, the new-look Falcons would be shocked if they won’t win the NFC South.
