According to an AP source, Blake Snell and the San Francisco Giants have agreed to a two-year, $62 million contract.
The Associated Press was informed on Monday night by a person familiar with the negotiations that Blake Snell, the two-time Cy Young Award winner, and the San Francisco Giants had reached an agreement on a $62 million, two-year contract.
The individual talked under the condition of anonymity since the deal was contingent on a satisfactory physical examination. After this season, Snell is able to choose to opt out and become a free agency.
Snell receives a $15 million salary this year in addition to a $17 million signing bonus that is due on January 15, 2026. If he extends the contract until 2025, he will receive $30 million.
Snell, a 30-year-old left-hander, won Cy Young in 2018 with Tampa Bay and last year with San Diego. He is 71-55 with a 3.20 ERA in 191 starts across eight major league seasons.
Ten days prior to the Padres opener, Snell accepted the contract, opening the door for Snell to make his Giants debut against his old team. He becomes a part of a rotation that also includes Kyle Harrison, a left-hander, and right-handers Logan Webb and Jordan Hicks.
In the 2011 amateur draft, Tampa Bay selected him with the 52nd pick, and he made it to the major leagues in 2016. In 2018, he defeated Justin Verlander to win his first Cy Young, going 21-5 with a 1.89 ERA.
He inked the biggest contract ever at the time for a pitcher not yet eligible for arbitration, a $50 million, five-year deal. In 2019, he had an injury-plagued season and finished 6-8 with a 4.29 ERA.
Before the pandemic-shortened 2020 season, Snell made a statement regarding his salary, “I’m not playing unless I get mine,” which drew some unwelcome attention. Snell later acknowledged that one could interpret the comment as self-serving.
The Rays, who were defeated by the Los Angeles Dodgers in six games in the 2020 World Series, were made possible by Snell. The Rays fell 3-1, and despite giving up just two hits, he was pulled from Game 6 after 5 1/3 innings.
For prospects, Tampa Bay sent Snell to San Diego. After spending his first two seasons with the Padres going 15-16, he went on to win his second Cy Young award with a 14-9 record and an NL-leading 2.25 ERA. In the second half, he had a 1.54 ERA and went 8-2.
After Snell rejected a $20,325,000 qualifying offer from San Diego, the team will obtain an additional draft pick following the fourth round. The Giants lost their second-round pick and their $500,000 allocation for signing Chapman, therefore they will forfeit their third-round pick and their $500,000 international signing bonus.
