Goalie Filip Larsson has joined the Pittsburgh Penguins on a two-year contract, General Manager and President of Hockey Operations Kyle Dubas said today.

The deal, which has an NHL average yearly value of $775,000, is valid through the 2025–2026 season.

In the Swedish Hockey League, the premier professional league in Sweden, Larsson, 25, played for Leksands IF in 2023–24. In 28 games, he recorded a league-high five shutouts, 1.93 goals against average,.920 save percentage, and a 19–9–0 record. Additionally, in the 2024 playoffs, he played in five postseason games with Leksands IF, going 3-2-0 with a 1.91 goals-against average, a.929 save percentage, and one shutout.

The 6-foot-2, 194-pound goalie played in Sweden’s second-tier professional league, HockeyAllsvenskan, for three seasons prior to 2020–23. In 2022, HV71 won the league championship.

In 2019–20, Larsson made his most recent professional appearance in North America as a member of the Detroit Red Wings. He participated in seven AHL games with the Grand Rapids Griffins and ten ECHL games with the Toledo Walleye that season.

Larsson played collegiate hockey at the University of Denver (NCAA) in 2018–19, finishing 13–6-3 with a 1.95 goals-against average, a.932 save percentage, and four shutouts before turning pro. He played with the Tri-City Storm of the US Hockey League for one season in 2017–18, winning the USHL’s ‘Goaltender of the Year’ award. Larsson had an 18–10-0 record with Tri-City and led the league in goals against average (1.65) and save percentage (.941) as well.

The native of Stockholm, Sweden, placed second with Team Sweden in the World Junior Championship of 2018 and the World Under-18 Championship in 2016.
