At the same time, Three Boston Red Sox starting pitchers were sidelined by injuries Within fifteen days of one another, Nick Pivetta, Garrett Whitlock, and Brayan Bello all passed away from various illnesses.
Pivetta and Bello have resumed their activities, and on May 15, Whitlock made the last move toward his return.
The right-hander seemed ready to return to the major leagues as he made his first and probably only rehab start against the Worcester Red Sox. Whitlock struck out five batters in 4.2 innings of shutout work while walking just one. Of the 61 pitches he threw, 40 were strikes.
Whitlock, Pivetta, and Bello’s first outing together after his recuperation started was the finest. Pivetta gave up four runs on three hits and four walks, while Bello gave up two runs in 2.2 innings.
Whitlock was substituted out of Boston’s game against the Guardians on April 16 despite not seeming to be hurt. The next day, he was placed on the 15-day injured list due to an oblique strain, and the Red Sox were surprised at how long it took him to recuperate.
After his stint with the Woo Sox, the right-hander stated he felt well, as his manager had anticipated. Following a live batting practice in which Whitlock’s pitches reached 95 miles per hour, Alex Cora expressed confidence that Whitlock would only require one rehab start. If everything goes as planned, Boston anticipates that Whitlock will start its upcoming series against the Tampa Bay Rays, which runs on May 20–22.
Whitlock will make his comeback as the last member of the Red Sox starting rotation. Red Sox Nation is eager for their rotation to return, but Boston surprised everyone by holding up admirably with the absence of three of its starters. Cooper Criswell may now be well-known to Sox fans.
