Alexander Mattison explains the team’s emphasis on run games and his return to the Minnesota Vikings for a contract base with.
Alexander Mattison signed a two-year contract with Minnesota, so his workload for 2023 is yet unknown, but he is happy to be back in the state. The 2019 draft pick chose to return to Minnesota after briefly weighing his options in free agency following the conclusion of his four-year rookie deal. “I’m content. This place is amazing to me. I often say to folks that I would prefer to play here,” Mattison remarked. “It’s just an unbelievable organization, an unbelievable locker room, a team full of amazing guys, amazing coaches and amazing staff, so I’m blessed to be back.”
Although Dalvin Cook remains under contract with Minnesota through 2025, there’s been speculation about his future during an offseason in which the Vikings have trimmed salary cap space through multiple moves.
Mattison led the running backs through every drill and played with the first team during the 11-on-11 action on Tuesday since Cook was not present during the optional organized team activity practice. His skills and capacity to keep the entire offense available during games—whether it’s by starting in Cook’s place or relieving him for a series—have previously been praised by coaches. Mattison stated that in order to maintain their close bond, he and Cook have spoken on FaceTime on a daily basis. Mattison is relishing the chance to advance further in an offense that has remained relatively consistent, and he is prepared for any role.
