Devin Vassell made a proposal to take the helm of Spurs program and abandon Nebraska huskers while the other…

The Spurs are on track for sustained success. They’ve got the reigning NBA Rookie of the Year in Victor Wembanyama, a quality young core of players like Devin Vassell, Jeremy Sochan and Keldon Johnson, and hold two of the top eight picks in this year’s NBA draft. With a gluttony of selections this year and beyond, the Spurs’ culture, and the front office vision to back it all, the Spurs can be the epicenter of the NBA universe again this offseason, as they were last season by obtaining the first overall pick in the draft. With all those positives, several high-end players will likely have an interest in donning silver and black next season. It’s nice to have suitors instead of having to court players and the Spurs should take advantage of this perk by considering these three veteran wings.

For just the second time in his career, the 34-year-old wing is slowing down and shooting under 40% from three-point range this season, but he still has a lot to give the Spurs. Due to his recent injury struggles, the 6’6″ five-time NBA all-star would probably be available for less money to San Antonio. With four NBA titles under his belt as half of the Splash Bros. alongside Steph Curry, he possesses a winning background that will help the young Spurs learn how to win. In addition to intangibles, Thompson creates space for Victor Wembanyama and others with his ability to make threes, which may even be a perceived ability at this stage of his career. It is also in line with the offensive preferences of the Spurs.

Thompson would also not have to be the star of San Antonio. The 34-year-old will be more productive when the rigors of an NBA season wear him down because of this lack of physical toll. Thompson has the poise and experience to play a larger role for the Spurs, especially in times where they need that steadying influence, and he can be a sparkplug for the second unit in his limited minutes each game. The Spurs wouldn’t have to give up any assets in order to sign Thompson as a free agent, which would also prevent any potential future franchise expansion. If the team can sign Thompson in the correct price range, it’s probably a win-win situation.
