In 2024, the off-season brought about a major signing for the Green Bay Packers. They actually made two.
Security Josh Jacobs, the running back, and Xavier McKinney were possibly the two best players available this offseason at their respective positions. With the Packers, they both made it. Regarding his new secondary, McKinney had a lot to say following the first OTA practice.
Examine the market for safety as it stands today. Jamal Adams, Justin Simmons, Quandre Diggs, Eddie Jackson, and Micah Hyde are still plenty of alternatives.
Is there any logic to the Green Bay Packers’ choice to pay Xavier McKinney $68 million over four years? They needed a cornerstone, not someone to repair the position, and they think McKinney, who is 24 years old, can provide that. He thought this was the best bunch he had ever been with after practice today:
The Packers still selected three safeties in the draft despite McKinney’s contract. It gave them the freedom to assign their young players to desired locations. Javon Bullard, Evan Williams, and Kitan Oladapo are included in that. When combined with Jaire Alexander and Eric Stokes, the redesigned safety position has the potential to produce one of the NFL’s best secondaries. Evidently, McKinney already feels that way.
