The Cleveland Cavaliers announced on Wednesday that Mike Gansey, who has been assistant general manager since 2017, has been promoted to general manager.
Following Koby Altman’s promotion to president of basketball operations in January, the change was made. Both Gansey and Altman joined the front office in 2017.
Prior to joining the Cavs, Gansey was employed by the Cleveland Charge, their G League affiliate, from 2012 to 2017. Following the 2016–17 season, he was awarded the NBA G League Executive of the Year title.
The Cavaliers are in the midst of a major turnaround, coming out of the All-Star break with a 35-23 record. The squad is seeking its first playoff appearance since LeBron James left in 2018.
According to Jason Lloyd of The Athletic, James stated last week, “I think Koby and those guys have done an unbelievable job drafting and making trades.
” In addition to choosing Darius Garland and Evan Mobley, Gansey “played a significant part in the franchise’s renaissance,” as ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski observed.
In addition, Gansey is well-known for his playing career, having excelled at Olmsted Falls High School in the Cleveland region. He was a three-time All-State selection and came in second place to LeBron in the Mr. Ohio Basketball vote.
Together with Kevin Pittsnogle, the 39-year-old stunned Chris Paul and Wake Forest to lead West Virginia to the Elite Eight in 2005 during his collegiate career. Paul talked about All-Star Weekend and his final collegiate game.
After a brief professional career overseas and in the G League, Gansey has emerged as a valuable commodity in the Cavaliers front office.
