Harper and Wheeler lead Phillies to 5-1 victory over Brewers…
MILWAUKEE – Bryce Harper broke the tie with a two-run homer in the sixth inning, supporting Zack Wheeler’s strong pitching as the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Milwaukee Brewers 5-1 on Tuesday night in a clash of division leaders.
The game was tied 1-1 until Harper hit a 1-1 pitch from Frankie Montas over the left-center wall for his 29th home run of the season, driving in Kyle Schwarber, who had reached on an infield single.
Montas (7-11) recorded 10 strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings, giving up three runs, six hits, and two walks.
The Phillies increased their lead to 4-1 in the seventh when Schwarber’s grounder deflected off pitcher Aaron Ashby’s leg, allowing Edmundo Sosa, who had doubled, to score.
Turner added a two-out RBI single in the ninth against Enoli Paredes.
Castellanos opened the second inning with a 430-foot homer over the left-center wall, marking his 21st of the season. The Phillies had runners on first and second later in the inning, but Montas struck out Cal Stevenson to end the threat.
The Brewers tied the game in the fourth when William Contreras singled and scored on Garrett Mitchell’s triple to right-center, but they left Mitchell stranded at third.
TRAINER’S ROOM
The Phillies reinstated Sosa from the 10-day injured list and sent infielder Buddy Kennedy to Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Additionally, catcher Aramis Garcia was outrighted to Lehigh Valley after clearing waivers, following his designation for assignment on Sunday.
Manager Rob Thomson reported that outfielder Austin Hays ran at full intensity for the first time since going on the injured list due to a kidney infection on September 5, stating that the infection has cleared up.
