As the San Francisco 49ers and Brandon Aiyuk’s contract negotiations progress toward summer, we have a contract benchmark to consider. Jeremy Fowler from ESPN reports that Aiyuk is looking into a recent extension signed by the Detroit Lions’ wide receiver.

“The 49ers and Aiyuk have been in discussions and negotiations,” though nothing major has emerged yet. Amon-Ra St. Brown’s recent four-year, $28 million annual contract with the Lions serves as a benchmark in this situation.

Aiyuk appears to be aiming to surpass that figure. While he doesn’t need to be the highest-paid player in the league, he will likely command a salary at or above that level due to his contributions to the offense.

He doesn’t need to be the top-paid receiver, just the second highest. A look at wide receiver stats on OvertheCap reveals that St. Brown ranks behind Davante Adams in total value and A.J. Brown in average yearly pay and total guarantees, placing him 12th in fully guaranteed money.

There is flexibility regarding guaranteed money since many contracts focus on this aspect. Aiyuk doesn’t need Tyreek Hill-level numbers, but he still deserves a significant contract.

For comparison, Deebo Samuel’s deal averages $23 million per year.

Aiyuk isn’t the first 49ers player to negotiate a summer contract, and reports indicate that progress hasn’t been smooth.

He is undoubtedly worth more than that benchmark, as he plays a crucial role in the offense. His chemistry with Deebo Samuel makes the 49ers a formidable team, and he’s a key target for Brock Purdy.

The 49ers will exercise Aiyuk’s fifth-year option, so fans shouldn’t worry just yet, especially since Nick Bosa signed his extension in September.
