Russell began his football career when the Steelers selected him in the 16th round of the 1963 NFL Draft after he played at the University of Missouri. Although he showed great potential, he missed the 1964 and 1965 seasons due to military service. He returned to the team in 1966 and quickly became a key player on the Steelers’ defense.
