In Week 2 of the 2023 season, Minkah Fitzpatrick made headlines after his tackle on Browns running back Nick Chubb, which resulted in a severe injury that sent Chubb to injured reserve and effectively ended his season. Fitzpatrick, the safety for the Pittsburgh Steelers, struck Chubb by wrapping him up around the legs as he approached the goal line. The incident raised concerns about player safety and sparked discussions regarding tackling techniques in the league. Fitzpatrick’s tackle, while part of the game, highlighted the risks involved in football, especially for players in high-impact positions like Chubb.

Many football fans quickly labeled Minkah Fitzpatrick as a dirty player after his hit on Nick Chubb, but the All-Pro safety asserted that he never intended to cause Chubb the severe injury that ended his season. Chubb, a four-time Pro Bowler, suffered a catastrophic injury when his left knee buckled during the first contact, leading to surgeries to repair his meniscus, MCL, and later his ACL.

Since undergoing surgery, Chubb has been vocal about his recovery journey, which began over eight months ago. When recently asked about Fitzpatrick’s hit, he expressed understanding rather than animosity. According to Eric Edholm of NFL.com, Chubb remarked, “It wasn’t at all a dirty hit, in my opinion. I do not hold Fitzpatrick accountable. That’s how the game works.” His perspective highlights the camaraderie and acceptance of risks inherent in the sport, even after experiencing such a devastating injury.

Despite Chubb’s forgiveness, Fitzpatrick faced backlash early in the season as fans criticized him for the tackle. Compounding his challenges, Fitzpatrick encountered his own injury woes. In Week 8 against the Jaguars, he suffered a non-contact hamstring injury just eight snaps into the game, sidelining him for four weeks.

Returning in Week 15, Fitzpatrick collided with former Steelers teammate Patrick Peterson, exacerbating his knee and resulting in missing the remainder of the regular season before the playoffs. While some might view Fitzpatrick’s injury as poetic justice for the hit on Chubb, it’s crucial to recognize that injuries are an unfortunate part of the game, often beyond a player’s control.

Ultimately, the fact that Chubb is the starting running back for the Cleveland Browns does not diminish the universal sentiment against witnessing a player suffer a severe injury. As he progresses through his rehabilitation, Chubb remains optimistic about his recovery and is focused on returning to the field.

Fans and players alike hope for his full recovery, as the league benefits from having star athletes like Chubb in play. His determination and positive attitude in the face of adversity serve as an inspiration, reminding everyone of the resilience required in professional sports. Let’s hope to see him back on the field soon, contributing to the game he loves.
