Memphis head coach Ryan Silverfield discusses his relationship with Mike Norvell and the upcoming game against Florida State.
After a much-needed bye week, Florida State Seminoles head coach Mike Norvell aims to secure the team’s first victory of the season against the Memphis Tigers, following two straight losses to conference rivals.
The matchup is historic, with 18 previous encounters since 1959, but it marks the first meeting since 1990, when Bobby Bowden led Florida State to a decisive win over the Tigers. This game is also unique as it will be Norvell’s first chance to face Memphis since leaving the program, where he served as head coach from 2016 to 2019.
Memphis head coach Ryan Silverfield discussed the significance of facing a program like Florida State and going up against his former mentor. He emphasized that while they share a close friendship, this game is not about him versus Norvell.
Silverfield noted, “We won’t approach this game any differently than our first two opponents. Florida State is a preseason top 10 team loaded with talent, returning 79 players from their ACC championship roster and nine All-ACC players. Their offensive line is one of the most experienced in the country, and their defensive front is highly regarded as well. We’re excited about the challenge and focused on our own improvements as we prepare for this early game.”
Entering Week 3, Memphis boasts a 2-0 record while FSU is struggling at 0-2. Fans have been particularly concerned about quarterback DJ Uiagalelei’s performance. Despite the scrutiny, Silverfield praised Uiagalelei’s past successes and physical abilities, stating, “He’s a phenomenal quarterback with a proven track record at both Clemson and Oregon State. Our job is to disrupt him, whether that means blitzing or dropping back.”
