Mike Tomlin believes the Steelers do not have an issue with George Pickens.

Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin doesn’t see wide receiver George Pickens as a distraction, despite Pickens’ visible frustration.

Pickens, who leads the team with receptions and yards, played a career-low 34 snaps during Sunday night’s 20-17 loss to the Dallas Cowboys, recording just three catches for 26 yards. Tomlin described the reduction in playing time as “load management,” emphasizing the need to conserve players for critical moments in the season.

However, Pickens seemed to struggle with this decision. He wore eye black with the words “always (expletive) open” and sat alone for long periods as his teammates discussed plays with coaches. After a missed opportunity where quarterback Justin Fields overthrew him, Pickens reacted by slamming his helmet, and at the end of the game, he grabbed the facemask of Cowboys cornerback Jourdan Lewis, who later called him “weak.”

Pickens did not speak to reporters after the game and avoided them again on Monday, heading to the equipment room instead.

This isn’t the first time Pickens has faced scrutiny for his effort; he was criticized last season for not blocking downfield during a teammate’s run, which he attributed to avoiding injury.

Tomlin has consistently supported Pickens, acknowledging recent missteps but highlighting overall improvements. He believes that addressing issues publicly does not contribute to Pickens’ growth as a player or person. Tomlin clarified that the decision to limit Pickens’ playing time was communicated before the Dallas game, and Pickens did not object.

The Steelers need Pickens to remain engaged to maintain a balanced offense, especially as other receivers have underperformed. Pickens has 23 receptions, surpassing the combined total of his teammates Van Jefferson, Scotty Miller, and Calvin Austin III.

In the upcoming game against the Las Vegas Raiders, Fields is expected to start again, while Russell Wilson returns to practice as he recovers from a calf injury.
