David Montgomery will be a key player in the Detroit Lions’ backfield for at least the next three years following a well-deserved contract extension.

As reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Montgomery and the Lions have reached a two-year, $18.2 million agreement on Saturday, securing the 27-year-old’s place in Honolulu blue through 2027.

Since joining the Lions in 2023, David Montgomery has emerged as one of just nine running backs to rush for at least 1,286 yards. He has also scored 17 touchdowns during this period, ranking second in the NFL behind Derrick Henry, Raheem Mostert, and Kyren Williams, who each have 18.

Montgomery’s scoring consistency is impressive, as he has found the end zone in 15 of his 18 regular-season games with the Lions. He enters Week 6’s matchup against the Dallas Cowboys with an active streak of seven consecutive games with a touchdown.

Beyond his on-field reliability, Montgomery has been a vital presence in the Lions’ locker room. Assistant head coach and running backs coach Scottie Montgomery highlighted this to Nolan Bianchi of the Detroit News, stating, “He sets the tone for practice and how he finishes. You’ve seen some of these runs—most would stop after 25 yards, but he’s going 50, 60, 70 yards.”

Locking up Montgomery is a smart move for the Lions, especially since he’s thriving after his transition from the Chicago Bears. With 2023 first-round pick Jahmyr Gibbs alongside him, the extension strengthens a formidable one-two punch in the backfield that can compete with any in the NFL for the foreseeable future.
