LATEST INJURY UPDATE: Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes Shrug Off Rolled Ankle To Lead Kansas City To OT Win~ As Kansas City Remains Unbeaten~ Plus Chiefs TE Travis Kelce Makes NFL History In Front Of Super Star Girlfriend Tailor Swift

Despite aggravating the left ankle injury he sustained the previous week, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes played through the pain and didn’t miss a snap during Monday night’s 30-24 overtime win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, leading his team to another victory to remain undefeated.

Mahomes explained that he simply rolled the ankle again but reassured that he plans to be ready for the Chiefs’ Week 10 matchup against the Denver Broncos.

“I rolled the ankle, I rolled it last week, and when you roll it again, it never feels good,” Mahomes said to ESPN’s Lisa Salters after the game. “But as I got some time, it started feeling better. We have a short week, but we’ll rehab it up and I’ll be ready to go next week.”

Mahomes injury scare

The injury occurred early in the fourth quarter. With the Chiefs facing third-and-goal from the 7-yard line, Mahomes scrambled toward the right sideline before delivering a pass to Samaje Perine for a touchdown that tied the game. He appeared to land awkwardly, staying on the field for a moment before walking off, leaning heavily on team personnel.

“I was obviously running for the goal line, kind of committed to running the football, and at the last second saw Samaje, so I kind of awkwardly rolled the ankle a bit,” Mahomes said after the game. “Definitely scary, I think it hurt more just because it was the same ankle I rolled last week.

“So it scared me a little bit, but once I took my breath and calmed down a little bit, it ended up not being too bad.”

After briefly entering the medical tent, Patrick Mahomes was soon jogging on the sideline and, to the delight of the fans at Arrowhead Stadium, returned to the game for the Chiefs’ next drive. Despite the initial scare, he didn’t appear significantly hampered by the injury for the remainder of the game, although there were a few plays where the injury was noticeable. On his first drive back, Mahomes led the Chiefs on a 15-play, 78-yard touchdown march to take the lead, and then orchestrated another drive in overtime for the game-winning touchdown.

He finished the game 34 of 44 for 291 yards and three touchdowns, with a post-injury stat line of 11 of 15 for 102 yards and a touchdown.

“When he was being carried off, that wasn’t too easy, I wasn’t sure exactly where he was going to be with it,” head coach Andy Reid told reporters. “But he might have the loosest ankles in America. I mean, it’s ridiculous how he can come back from those things, and then he’s mentally tough on top of that.”

Mahomes had been dealing with an ankle injury after getting rolled up on in the Chiefs’ Week 8 win over the Las Vegas Raiders. He was listed on the injury report throughout the week leading up to Monday night’s game, though he fully participated in practice each day.

This wasn’t the first time Mahomes had played through an ankle injury. His performance on Monday likely reminded many of his unforgettable effort in Super Bowl LVII, when he played through a sprained ankle to lead the Chiefs to a championship.

Prayers and best wishes as you recover champ

Fortunately for the Chiefs, Mahomes said this rolled ankle wasn’t as severe as that earlier injury. He anticipates that with the short week ahead, it will mostly be about managing soreness before facing the Denver Broncos.

“It hurt a lot more,” Mahomes said of the 2023 injury. “I still have mobility in my ankle and still do after this game, so obviously I’ll sleep on it, probably get a little swelling tomorrow. But with a short week, you just go in, take care of it, and be prepared to play next week.”
