DeForest Buckner, the defensive tackle for the Indianapolis Colts, says that signing a contract extension was a “no brainer.” After doing so, Buckner expressed optimism about the future.
The Indianapolis Colts wanted to concentrate on retaining their own players as they looked ahead to the 2024 campaign.
Growing and maintaining their own has been frequently addressed by general manager Chris Ballard. Shane Steichen, the head coach, has also preached about the value of continuity in the organization. The Colts proceeded with their plan after the key decision makers were in agreement.
First, they kept their free agents, signing long-term agreements for players like Grover Stewart, Michael Pittman Jr., and Kenny Moore II. By extending Zaire Franklin’s contract a year before it expired, the Colts also attempted to prevent other players from entering the free agent market. Indianapolis was trying very hard to hold its core together for the time being.
DeForest Buckner is one of the players that instantly springs to mind when considering the nucleus of the Colts. Ballard and the Colts were unwilling to take a chance on their Pro Bowl defense hitting the open market, especially with one year left on his current contract.
On Monday, Buckner and the Colts reached a two-year, $46 million contract deal that will keep Buckner with the team until the 2026 campaign. Buckner did not have to consider his decision to go back very carefully.
Buckner said on Tuesday, “It was an easy decision on my part – to come back and stay with the team and this organization.” “Simply my friendship with Chris Ballard.” Every season, I’ll drop by for a one-on-one meeting at the conclusion of the run. We will discuss the season’s outcome and other minor matters. When he inquired if I was still pleased where I was, I said, “Of course.” I adore the bonds I’ve forged with my coworkers and the direction our team is taking. It’s visible to me.
“So it was really easy for me to make that decision and then also my family. My family has been thriving here. It was a no brainer for me.”
Bringing Buckner to Indy from the San Francisco 49ers back in 2020 has been a massive success for the Colts. Since the Colts traded for Buckner, the defensive tackle has racked up 281 tackles, 42 tackles for loss, 32.5 sacks, 87 QB hits, six forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries, and 16 passes defended. Buckner also has two Pro Bowl appearances and a First-Team All-Pro nod since coming to Indy.
Not only has Buckner been one of the most important Colts on the field, but he fits what the Colts want in their locker room. They want fearless, unselfish leaders who want to win more for their teammates than themselves. The loyalty and passion that a player like Buckner brings to a team is infectious and helps build a winning culture.
