News from the Colorado Rockies: Rockies and Shortstop Complete Long-Term Contract.

According to The Associated Press, the Colorado Rockies and shortstop Ezequiel Tovar reached an agreement on Tuesday for a seven-year, $63.5 million contract that includes a 2031 team option. The agreement would increase the deal to $84 million over eight seasons if it were to be activated. The one-year contract that Tovar agreed to on February 29 for a salary of $745,000 in the major leagues and $361,000 in the minor levels is superseded by his new agreement.

Rockies general manager Bill Schmidt stated in a statement, “He has already proven he is one of the best shortstops in baseball, and we see him as a cornerstone of this franchise for years to come.” The 22-year-old’s new contract pays him $1.5 million in salary this season, $4 million the following year, $5 million in 2026, $8 million in 2027, $11 million in 2028, $14 million in 2029, and $16 million in 2030. He also receives a $1.5 million signing bonus. With a $2.5 million buyout, the Rockies have a $23 million option.

Veteran teammate Kyle Freeland let Tovar know how much the team believed in him last season. This seemed to helped him settle into his high-pressure role in the first full season of his big league career.
